Maryland Grades 3-5

Numeracy Development Talks

Target Specific Milestones in the Maryland Numeracy Development Framework

Numeracy Development Talks from Essential Math Concepts target specific Milestones in the Maryland Numeracy Development Framework. In the Year 1 Implementation, teachers will lead Number Line Talks with a small group or class of students to apply number line measurement strategies to:

  • Represent whole numbers, fractions, and decimals on number lines

  • Explore equivalent fractions, common denominators, and addition and subtraction of fractions.

In Year 2 and 3 Implementations, teachers will lead talks exploring:

  • Addition and subtraction of whole numbers represented on number lines and by a series of numerical equations.

  • Multiplication of fractions on number lines.

  • Multiplication and division of whole numbers on number lines and in tables.

Prepare Students for Middle School Math

The focus on number lines, numerical equations, and multiplication/division tables is designed to prepare students to represent and calculate with rational numbers on number lines, write algebraic equations to solve problems, and build ratio tables to solve proportional problems in middle school mathematics.

Year 1 Implementation - Number Lines Talks

Each Number Line Talk from Essential Math Resources includes the following resources:

  • Videos and instructional notes to conduct Number Line Talks with a small group or class of students to review and apply basic fraction concepts.

  • PDF of a whiteboard manipulative kit that can be downloaded and used to create a set of magnetic measurement bars and fraction strips.

  • Professional Learning Videos that explore how measurement bar strategies help students build foundational fraction concepts.

  • Daily Number Line Tasks to provide ongoing practice and conceptual review.

  • Number Line Practice Pages for individual practice and differentiated instruction.
